[Bonding Date] On September 17, 2021, Tianjin, China and Punjab, Pakistan signed a letter of intent to establish a sister-province relationship.
Punjab is located in the northeast of Pakistan, bordering India in the east, with its capital being Lahore. With an area of 20.53 square kilometers and a population of more than 100 million, the province has the highest population density in Pakistan. Most of its inhabitants are Punjabis, and 99% are Muslims, mainly Sunnis. Other religions include Christianity, Hinduism and Sikhism. The province is located in a fertile river valley, with the Pothohar Plateau in the northwest, the Thar Desert and Semidesert in the southeast, and the Himalayas in the north. It has four distinct seasons and annual rainfall of 125 to 500 millimeters. With a long history of development and dense artificial irrigation canals, it is the main agricultural area in Pakistan, occupying 65% of the nation's arable land and contributing a wheat output accounting for more than 70% of the country. The province also has developed industries, including textile, machinery, electrical appliances, metal processing, etc. It is rich in mineral resources such as coal, salt, gypsum and dolomite. Its GDP accounts for more than 50% of the national GDP.
Punjab has several China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, covering energy, transportation infrastructure and other fields. Phase II of the CPEC in Punjab mainly includes agricultural and industrial cooperation and livelihood projects.
