A total of 190 international students from countries including Russia and Spain took part in an immersive Pingju Opera experience at Tianjin's Haihe Theater on July 17, gaining a deeper appreciation of one of the city's most treasured traditions.

Hosted by Tianjin Normal University, the event combined live performances, hands-on activities and expert lectures, introducing overseas students to the rich traditions of Pingju Opera.

Artists from the Tianjin Pingju Baipai Troupe explained the century-long history of the art form, what defines the Tianjin style, the symbolism behind opera facial makeup and the cultural significance of traditional costumes.

Students then watched classic Pingju performances, admiring the graceful singing, expressive acting and elegant stage design.

The experience continued with interactive workshops, where participants painted their own opera masks while learning the meanings of different colors and character types. They also tried on traditional opera costumes and practiced classic stage poses.

A student from Russia said the event gave her a better understanding of the depth of Chinese culture and language.

The event not only provided an enriching experience for overseas students in China but also promoted traditional Chinese opera and fostered mutual understanding among young people from around the world.
