In recent years, Tianjin has embarked on an ambitious campaign to revitalize its central urban areas, focusing on the renovation of aging industrial zones. This initiative aims to inject new vitality into the city by integrating advanced sectors such as intelligent technology, industrial design and the digital economy.
A prime example of this effort is the redevelopment of the historic Tianjin No.1 Machine Tool Co. Founded in 1951, this factory was once a powerhouse in China's gear machine tool industry. The extensive renovation project, overseen by TEDA Investment Holding Co, began in May of last year. Covering an expansive 730,000 square meters and supported by an investment of 6.6 billion yuan ($930.8 million), the project is scheduled for completion in 2027.

Progress on the project is already evident, with several key facilities now operational. The refurbished reception hall, the factory history museum and the industrial innovation center have all been completed, while the merchants' exhibition center opened its doors to the public at the end of August.

When complete, the revitalized factory site will host an industrial science and technology museum, a wetland park and office buildings with various supporting facilities. This development will create a dynamic commercial hub, seamlessly integrating intelligent technology, industrial design and cultural and tourist attractions.

Originally constructed in 1937, the Tianjin No.1 Thermal Power Plant was once the largest power facility in North China, holding a special place in the collective memory of its residents. After undergoing extensive cultural preservation and reconstruction, the site reopened on Dec 30, 2022 as a commercial complex.
The design skillfully retains key architectural features of the original structure, including coal hoppers, crane beams and trusses, while updating the space to meet contemporary needs. Further embracing its power generation legacy, the complex has introduced photovoltaic umbrellas as part of its sustainability efforts.
The site now hosts several flagship stores and specialty retailers, including the Neobio Family Park and the Starbucks Reserve Store, adding a modern flair to this historically rich location.
