In Tianjin, the port drives urban prosperity
2024-07-12

On June 21, a shipment of Malaysian pineapples departed from Port Klang, Malaysia bound for the port of Tianjin in China. Remarkably, the fresh pineapples were on supermarket shelves for customers in China just 90 minutes after clearing customs.

The delivery was the fifth batch of Malaysian pineapples imported this year by Seahorse Biotech International Limited, a fruit distribution company based in the Tianjin Dongjiang Comprehensive Bonded Zone.

Leveraging the resources of Dongjiang Port, Seahorse has streamlined the logistics process, reducing time and costs to allow consumers to enjoy fresher and more affordable imported fruits.

The city of Tianjin has established itself as the "refrigerator" of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region thanks to its comprehensive cold and fresh logistics industry chain. The Dongjiang Comprehensive Bonded Zone alone hosts over 600 companies in the cold chain industry, with a freezer capacity of approximately 250,000 tons.

These facilities store a wide range of products, including quick-frozen food, fruit, aquatic products, wine, and dairy and ice products. Currently, the Dongjiang Comprehensive Bonded Zone's cold chain product imports account for more than 50 percent of Tianjin's total imports in this sector.

As the integration of port, industry and city development deepens, Binhai New Area in Tianjin is witnessing rapid growth in marine equipment, green petrochemicals, new energy, cross-border e-commerce, marine culture, tourism and the cruise industry, heralding a new era of economic expansion for the port.

On the afternoon of June 29, the cruise ship Dream, carrying approximately 2,200 passengers, set sail from Tianjin International Cruise Home Port, marking the beginning of the summer travel season. Tianjin's cruise tourism market is experiencing strong demand and a robust recovery. In the first half of 2024, the Dongjiang Border Inspection Station inspected nearly 230,000 cruise ship passengers and almost 100 cruise ships.

During the same period, more than 8,000 foreign tourists from nearly 80 countries, including France, Russia and the United States, visited Tianjin, with many choosing the city and Beijing as their primary sightseeing destinations.

Tianjin's international cruise port ranks second nationwide and first in northern China for the number of voyages and passengers it handles. This year, the port is expected to receive more than 180 cruise ships and upwards of 400,000 passengers, reflecting a significant surge in cruise tourism.

Tianjin is continuously enhancing its infrastructure with tourism, commerce and leisure in mind. This integrated development allows residents to benefit from the port's growth, demonstrating how it drives urban prosperity and makes the city more vibrant and appealing.
